Turning polymers back into monomers- Depolymerization

The process of turning a polymer into a monomer or a combination of monomers is known as depolymerization (or depolymerisation). A rise in entropy drives this process.

Scientists have long sought strategies to break polymers down into their monomers in order to stem the tide of unrecycled plastics. Plastics that degrade naturally in the environment, as well as ways to reclaim common polymers, have been the subject of intense research. Plastic-eating microorganisms have even been discovered by chemists. However, for the time being, crude oil, the raw material used to make plastics, is still so cheap that no recycling process can compete, though this may change in the future.
